Summer Photo Diary

It’s officially the end of summer. That means it’s time for a new seasonal photo diary. In the past, I called this series ‘Summer/Autumn/Winter/Spring in iPhone Photos’ but I think it’s time for a more intuitive and inclusive name. While the photos I share may be shot on my iPhone, DSLR, or GoPro, the commonality is that they’re all casual snapshots from my life that otherwise wouldn’t make the blog. I always enjoy looking back at my previous photo diaries and remembering the small, happy moments from a given season.

Summer 2021

This was the second year in a row that I didn’t do any of the quintessential summer activities. I didn’t make it to the beach or pool, and I didn’t take a true summer vacation. In 2020, I could chalk this up to the COVID-19 pandemic, of course. But this year, the cause was the big move to Richmond. My summer was spent working, packing, and doing a lot of logistical planning.

While I probably need to be better about planning a summer vacation next year and making a point of getting to the ocean, there were still some great moments in summer 2021. Here are the highlights:

My friend Hattie invited me to her family’s house in the Catskills for the Fourth of July. It was fun to get away for the weekend, take in the gorgeous views, and meet a bunch of new people. I hadn’t been in a room of strangers since before the pandemic!

In early July, Max and I drove to Richmond to tour our new place. We took measurements of all the rooms and doorways, which made move-in day easier. Before we braved I-95 North back to DC, we fueled up on caffeine.

By late July, the moving boxes had taken over my studio apartment. It was quite the obstacle course to get to the bathroom. If you’re moving anytime soon, I highly recommend wardrobe boxes (the tall ones in the back). They’re an added cost, but simplify the process of packing up your closet.

While I didn’t get to check off everything on my DC bucket list before moving, I did finally go paddle boating in the Tidal Basin! Coupled with brunch at Hank’s Oyster Bar, it was the best DC sendoff. I know I’ll cherish the memory.

At the beginning of August, my studio was all packed up. I said goodbye to my apartment, the first place I ever lived on my own, and my cute Cleveland Park neighborhood. It was bittersweet closing that chapter of my life.

Since the move, I’ve enjoyed taking walks around Max’s new campus, the University of Richmond. In 2020, it was named the most beautiful campus by the Princeton Review, and it’s easy to see why!

So far, one of my favorite places in Richmond is Virginia House. The gardens are an amazing place to spread out a picnic blanket, and I especially love when they have live jazz.
