The Best Products for Light Sleepers

I’m one of those people who loves sleep and requires a full eight hours of shut-eye each night to function as a human being. Unfortunately, I am also the lightest sleeper. A simple turn of a page or a truck passing outside is enough to wake me from a deep slumber. Over the years, I’ve thankfully figured out a routine that helps me get a good night’s rest (even in noisy environments like a sorority house and city apartment), and today, I’m sharing the absolute best products for light sleepers.

The Best Products for Light Sleepers

White Noise Machine

A white noise machine is my #1 must-have product as a light sleeper. You place the sound machine between you and the bothersome noise—whether that be by your window to alleviate road noise outside or next to a shared wall to block out your neighbor’s TV—and it creates a sound barrier. This white noise machine from Amazon is my favorite (in fact, I’ve bought it not once but twice) because it generates its own noise. This means it’s not playing on a loop, which is important because our brains tend to fixate on finding loops’ patterns, keeping us awake. If you want to control your white noise machine using an app on your phone, I recommend purchasing this version.

Silk Eye Mask

My silk eye mask has been a game-changer for my sleep. In fact, it was one of my best purchases of 2020. Darkness prompts your body to release melatonin, a chemical that helps you sleep. If you don’t have a naturally dark environment or your partner needs lights on after you go to bed, an eye mask is a cost-effective solution. I love my Slip silk eye mask because it’s incredibly soft, doesn’t tug on the sensitive skin around my eyes, and the band doesn’t leave a crimp in my hair like other non-silk eye masks. I will caveat that this eye mask blocks a fair amount of light but not all. If you want a complete blackout, I recommend the Bedtime Bliss eye mask.

Earplugs

Earplugs are another means of partially blocking out noise. Not only am I a light sleeper, but I also apparently have tiny ears. Traditional earplugs have never fit my ears, so I use these earplugs designed for small ears. They are surprisingly comfortable, and I highly recommend them for anyone else with this niche problem. 😂 Another option is the Bose Sleepbuds, which are headphones specifically designed for sleeping. I haven’t tested these but they’re high on my wish list!

Other Products That Help Me Sleep

While my sound machine, silk eye mask, and earplugs are the best products for light sleepers, I also want to share a few other items that help me get a good night’s rest. These apply to everyone, including you lucky deep sleepers!

Satin Pillowcase

Similar to my eye mask, I love how soft my satin pillowcase feels on my skin. It stays cooler during the night than a regular cotton pillowcase. Also, I’ve noticed that my hair is less static-y in the mornings after sleeping on it. I’d like to upgrade to a silk pillowcase at some point, but for now, this $12.99 satin version does the trick.

Weighted Blanket

Part of my nighttime routine is sitting with my weighted blanket over me for 15-20 minutes before bed. The weight of the blanket relaxes me, which then helps me drift off to sleep more easily. You can sleep with a weighted blanket on all night but I personally don’t because it makes me too hot. It’s also worth noting that weighted blankets are often helpful for people with anxiety.

Matching Pajama Set

This item is superfluous, but a matching pajama set is my favorite thing to slip on before bed. Something about it makes me feel put together. You can’t go wrong with a classic J. Crew set, but I also love these, these, and these.

Headspace Meditation App

A pre-sleep meditation always helps me wind down. Headspace is my meditation app of choice, and I’ve written a whole blog post about the app and my meditation practice.
